The Trustees approved 15 grants in the year totalling £96,316 compared with 25 for £96,693 in 2013.

The reduction in the number of grants approved in the year arose because of a strategic decision by the Trustees to enter into a partnership with Essex Community Foundation (ECF) to launch a new sports fund for Essex. It is called the Essex and Southend Sports Community Fund (ESSCF) and its objectives are to inspire people across Essex to take part in every kind of sport and to grow the amount of money that is available to make sporting grants in Essex. We hope to make it easier for individuals seeking small amounts to obtain grants. The aim is to make sport flourish at grass roots level around the county. Grant applications should be made to ECF who will carry out due diligence. For suitable applications, ECF will seek to find matching finance from other funds that it manages. In November 2013 the Trust made an initial contribution to the new ESSCF fund of £25,000 which is available to finance up to 50% of any individual grant application made to ECF under this arrangement. Senior Shrimps Social Club Programme

In June 2004 EASST made a grant of £5,000 to launch a Senior Shrimps Social Club programme provided by Southend United Community and Educational Trust.  In order to take part senior citizens must join the Senior Shrimps Social Club.  Membership is limited to 100 people and applications should be made to Frankie Banks on 01702 341351.

Objectives

The programme provides senior citizens with a variety of social activities that provide enjoyment, physical exercise and emotional support for the participants.  These objectives are reached by providing monthly activity sessions where local senior citizens are offered the opportunity to go on outings, visit sporting events, take part in exercise sessions and enjoy various other social evenings.

Through participating in the programme, local seniors will benefit from increased companionship, mental stimulation, moderate physical exercise and the enjoyment of a shared community.  These are all indicators of a happy and contented senior citizen.

Methods

The programme consists of a different activity each month, and culminates in a special Christmas party.  Participants MUST become members of the Senior Shrimps Club, which is free of charge to join, and through which all activities and events are publicised via a newsletter.  Information is also provided to the relevant local agencies who work with Southend United Community and Educational Trust, as they may be able to identify people who would benefit from this programme.  The initial membership of the Senior Shrimps Social Club is set at 100, and if required, a waiting list will be created.

The programme is administered and managed by volunteer members of the Southend United Football in the Community programme.  Each activity has limited number of places available, and these are offered on a "first come, first served" basis.  In order to offer an equitable programme, all members will have the opportunity to participate in all activities, but if some are over-subscribed, a waiting list is put in place.

Southend High School for Boys Sports Hall

In May 2004 EASST made a grant of £5,000 towards the installation of the playing surface in the new indoor sports hall at Southend High School for Boys, Prittlewell Close, Southend-on-Sea.  A further £3,000 was also granted to provide funds for an electronic scoreboard in the new sports hall.

Little Shrimps Activity Programme

In June 2003 and again in June 2004 EASST made donations of £5,000 to Frank Bank's Southend United in the Community to launch a new Little Shrimps Activity Programme.

Objectives
The programme engages pre-school aged children in activities that encourage both educational and physical development. These objectives are reached by providing weekly activity sessions where children take part in fun games, which all have an educational content. The activity sessions also include basic football skills training, which is designed to improve participants overall fitness and motor skills. This introduces youngsters to the concepts of teamwork, co-operation, healthy competition and sports-like behaviour.

Methods
The programme is carried out at local play and community centres, and caters for between 10 and 15 children at each venue. The programme operates at a different venue each day, from Monday to Friday throughout the academic year. (September to July), between 10:00am and 12:00pm . All activity sessions are carried out by Football in the Community Staff, who are all F.A. qualified coaches that have been police checked, and have received full first aid and child protection training.

St Christophers School Sports Hall

In June 2003 EASST made a donation of £5,000 to the St Christopher School sports hall project. St Christopher School is situated in Mountdale Gardens , Leigh-on-Sea, Essex . Since its establishment in 1906 it has been at the forefront of the development of education in South-East Essex for children with learning difficulties. The EASST donation is a contribution to the cost of the installation of the playing surface in the new sports hall.

In June 2004 the Trust made a further grant of £5,000 to provide basketball goals, protection cricket nets and other equipment for use in the sports hall.  This sports hall is specifically designed to be used by special needs young people with emphasis on providing physical education, physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities. The hall will be in daily use by the school and will also be used by members of a special needs youth club and a club for learning disabled adults. South East Essex District Cricket Board wish to base their disabled cricket coaching here and it would also be used by local football and basket ball youth sections together with four other special needs schools in our area. Southend United Football Club will provide sessions for special needs children. It is estimated that on a weekly basis over 350 children and young adults would use the hall, the majority of whom will have special needs.

For further information please access the school's website at www.tscs.southend.sch.uk
